Homemade Mei Tai Baby Carrier
Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 12:18AM This was my first sewing project. The baby didn't fall out. (Yay!)
I did not order enough fabric (because I didn't read the directions carefully enough), so I improvised. I made thinner straps and it seems very comfortable so far. I will say that this is a sized carrier, though I don't know how to label the sizes. The pattern, as it is written, seems to be for older children 6-12 months and up? It perfectly fit my friend's daughter who is two years old. If you are following this pattern for a smaller baby (and don't mind making a bigger one once they are a bit older) you can definitely downsize the body pieces by a few inches in width, the length is fine because of the napping hood.
I used organic duck fabric, but I would be interested in finding a softer fabric that is still sturdy, or learning how to break canvas in. Any suggestions? Next time, for the pocket, I will double the fabric or use a thicker fabric. Another note on the sizing is that is definitely a one size fits all, so mom and dad or dad and dad or whichever family member or friend wants to wear the baby will be able to with this carrier.
