    Beet greens salad

Today we took a trip into the country to visit some different farms and farm stands. The really helpful woman at Ticonderoga farms in Loudoun County, VA sold us Egg cucumbers and I couldn't wait to get home and try them! Upon further investigation of this oddlt shaped and colored cucumber, I found out that it is properly called Dragon's Egg Cucumber, and it tastes sweet with a very soft texture. It was perfect for a sald that was already fairly crunchy.

    2 handfuls beet greens
    1 handful purslane
    1 egg cucumber, sliced
    1 tomato, chopped

    Topped with Greek feta dressing.

    Yields 2 salads

The beet greens and purslane were purchased at the DuPont Circle Farmers Market and the egg cucumber and tomatoes were purchased at Ticonderoga Farm.

    Dupont circle DC farmers market

I finally made it to the Dupont Circle Farmers Market and it was EXPLICATIVE-ly AWESOME.

I have heard many complaints about this market being overpriced and crowded, but I thought the prices were comparable to neighboring markets and fighting through the crowd was worth it!

There were vendors from all over VA as well as from neighboring states such as MD, NJ, PA, and WV with products ranging from fresh seafoods and meats to sprays, lotions, potions and soaps. There were fresh steamed crabs, smoothies and people advertising for projects such as the DC Compost Cab. the fruits and veggies were terrifically ripe and it was the last week for wineberries.

I walked away with purslane, beet greens, garlic, eggs, zucchini, squash, zucchini blossoms, leeks, potatoes, chocolate milk, yogurt, sour cherries and a baguette for $55 dollars. The eggs were 25 cents cheaper than I have seen at other local markets.

The market is located at 1500 20th St NW in the DuPont Circle section of DC.
